Texas Senate Passes Bill That Will Challenge Cities Who Aid Illegal Immigrants

Wednesday, 15 June 2011 in US Immigration News 0 Comments

By Linda Ripoll

Just as suspected, the wildfire known as the anti-immigration movement is spreading from state to state. Earlier this afternoon, the Texas Senate passed a bill that will significantly decrease cities from harboring illegal immigrants. This new measure was pushed through by Republican Governor Rick Perry and is a powerful example of how serious many states are about the negative effects of illegal immigration and what legislators are willing to do to stop it. According to a recent article on Reuters.com, this new measure will give the police force more authority when it comes to deciphering someone’s citizenship status:

“The measure would prohibit local governments from banning law enforcement officers from asking about the immigration status of people who are lawfully detained or arrested.”

Many Democratic legislators are against this new measure as it will increase the amount of racial profiling as well as create a stigma for foreign business and the international community within Texas.
