How do I apply for a new passport?

In order to apply for a new passport, you will first need to complete the US State Department’s DS-11 application form, and apply in person at a local passport acceptance facility.

Once you have completed the DS-11 application, you will need to put together several pieces of supporting documentation including:

  • your original birth certificate or a certified copy with a raised seal or original naturalization certificate
  • two new passport photos
  • your current driver’s license or state ID, as well as a photocopy
  • a personal check or money order made out to the’ US Department of State’ for the appropriate passport fee
  • and a cash, check or card payment for the $25 execution fee, paid directly to the acceptance agent

Take all of these documents to a passport acceptance facility (often a post office) in your area. Beware, not all post offices have passport acceptance agents. The acceptance agent will administer the oath and seal your documents inside of a US postal envelope.

If you are applying for regular service, the passport agent at the post office will mail your documents to a national passport processing facility. You will receive your new passport in 4-6 weeks via certified mail. If you are applying for expedited service, simply pay an additional $60 at the time of the application, and you should receive the new passport in about 2 to 3 weeks, although this is never guaranteed.
