Limited validity passports are issued to applicants who are deemed to fit the requirements for a U.S. passport, but have not provided enough documentation. This is a fairly rare case that usually only applies to replacement passports issued at U.S. consulates overseas and applicants who have provided a valid, but insufficient short form birth certificate.
Some limited validity passports are good for one full year, while others are good for only a few months - depending on the situation. To update your passport without charge, be sure you do it within one year. Use form DS-5504, Application for a U.S. Passport: Name Change, Data Correction, and Limited Passport Book Replacement. Include your passport as well as new photos.
If you want to receive the replacement passport in 2 to 4 weeks (normal turnaround is 4 to 6 weeks), pay an additional $60 to the Department of State.
