What do I do if I lose my passport while traveling overseas?

The first thing you want to do is locate the US Embassy. You can find out the location of every single US Embassy around the world at travel.state.gov

Once you locate the US embassy, you will need to call and make an appointment as many of the US Embassies do not take walk-in appointments. You will need to complete the DS-11 application form for a new passport and a DS-64 application form to report the lost/stolen passport. You will also need to get access to your birth certificate as this will provide the US Embassy official with proof of your citizenship. The US Embassy will process your application in as little as one day and you will receive a limited validity US passport which is only good for one year and must be renewed in order to receive a traditional 10 year passport book. As soon as you get back to the US, it is important that you renew your passport.
