What is an E-Passport?

Every new passport is now an e-passport, or electronic passport. There is no separate type available—it’s the same thing.

For added security and efficient processing, all passports now have a small RFID chip embedded in the back cover of the book. The chip contains all of the same information that is printed on the first page of your book, including a digital image of your photo that can be used by Customs and Border Control to identify you using facial recognition software.

The chip also contains an identification code that gives border agents secure access to the Department of State database to confirm that your passport is valid for travel.

The chip does not contain other personal information not in the book, such as social security number, home address, parents' names or phone number.
