Will I need to present my birth certificate when getting my child a passport?

Anyone applying for a new passport, who does not have a previously issued passport to use as identification, must provide proof of US Citizenship. For anyone born here in the US, this means a state-issued (not hospital issued) birth certificate. Parents of the applicant, however, only need to provide valid identification.

Please note that a hospital issued birth certificate WILL NOT suffice! A certified birth certificate is issued by the city, county or state in which you were born. It has a registrar's embossed, multicolored seal, signature and the date the certificate was filed with the registrar's office (within one year of your birth).

All birth certificates must also include the full names of the applicant's parents.

If you've misplaced your birth certificate, you may order a new one online at VitalChek. Their service is very affordable and easy to use. They also provide very quick turn around.
