A few things you should know about new passports:
Most new passport applications take about 4 to 6 weeks for standard processing. However, as an authorized passport expediter, we are able to help clients get new passports in as little as one or two days.
All new passport applications begin with form DS-11, provided by the Department of State. Even though you can pick up paper forms at many post offices, you cannot use that version to apply for an expedited passport.
New passports require proof of citizenship and identity. If you can't locate your birth certificate and a valid state ID, it can be very difficult to apply.
Every new passport starts with approval at a local acceptance facility, which is usually a post office or county clerk's office. From there the sealed packet it sent to the main processing center, or it's sent to us for expedited handling.

Some additional information about getting a new passport:
The U.S. Department of State issues passports through it's Passport Services Directorate, and is the sole authority in determining who is permitted to receive a U.S. passport. No one can push an application through, or otherwise influence their decision. The vast majority of Americans are entitled to a passport, so long as the application process is followed correctly.
Besides the use of improper forms or insufficient documentation, the most common reasons for new passports to be delayed or rejected are:
A past criminal record is not a reason why a person would be denied a new passport.
While a passport is required for travel abroad, it is not a guarantee of entry to a foreign country. It is essentially a request to be given the right to travel or reside temporarily within another government's territory, and to gain access to U.S Consular services while overseas.
Travelers should always check as to whether they will also need a visa to enter their destination country.
